Feel Like You Have a Wikipedia Mind and You're Living in a YouTube World?

Most of us have adjusted to the internet quite nicely and for some it was a welcome relief. We watched the dumbing down of society through years of television watching as attention spans shrunk and reading scores plummeted. The internet, with its written content seemed like the salvation of intelligent life on our planet.

But the dreaded video, like dandelions on the lawn, would not be gone for long. Tapping into the new trend and helping themselves in the process, Google bought Youtube and quicker than you could say, well, Google, the internet plunged into its next crisis.

Between the splogs written in pidgin English and the overload of videos, the internet seems doomed to become just another fancy television with booku commercials and 18 million shopping channels. Ebooks and other ventures to put the written word on the net have faded and Amazon, the world's largest bookstore is now probably also the worlds largest video store, thanks to the internet.

Our kids were reading on the internet, now, once again, they are just watching. So what is the problem? Reading is active, thoughtful, mindful. Watching is passive.

All videos are not bad, of course, and diversions for relaxation's sake are fine. But given the choice, too many people will just watch life past them by. Couch potato-ism led to obesity and lower test scores and a population that had never opened a classic book or had the attention span to read one.

If you feel this trend is not in the best interest of humankind, you're not alone. In a free society, there is nothing we can do, but watch our fellow citizens slowly become extras in the Movie "Idiocracy." On the other hand, it may not be all bad. Educate your children well and make sure they read books and learn how to think. There is a big difference between watching and observing, and teach them that difference. Then, their chances of success will be greatly enhanced because the competition will be the "tubers," the watchers.

Don't despair. There are sill real authors and writers and thinkers out there and you can meet them at the library, or online.
